Forward Bend Breakthrough!!

My hamstrings have been tight all my life. When I first started doing yoga in my twenties I could not touch my toes. I never thought I would get to the point where I might see my head near my knee. Well, I was doing a standing forward fold last night before bedtime. I don’t know what happened, but I realized that my gut was tight and maybe if I just relaxed it a little bit, I might be able to go deeper. Something just…realeased.

Miracle upon miracles! I could almost reach my knees with my forehead!

This is something that is easy for a lot of yogis, but it has been impossible for me. I am not quite sure what happened. My home yoga practice has not been stellar recently due to a heat wave last week, but all of a sudden, I’ve broken through a major, lifelong barrier!

I still have to bend my knees slightly to go that deep, but I am almost there! Wow!

I guess it just goes to show you - regular practice can make a huge difference. :-)

huh? A heatwave makes you looser! Isn’t that why they practise at blood temperature in Bikram Yoga?
I know exactly what you mean though - I spent years (and yes, I do mean years) struggling with forward bends. My teacher would say “paschimottânâsana” and immediately I would think “uh oh, here we go”. Then one day I thought hey! why am I so worked up about this? There’s no competition in yoga, even with myself. Just relax, let go, no goals, just go with the flow.. and what do you know, those tight hamstrings decided to stop fighting me. Okay, in winter (and it gets really cold here) my forward bends are not what you see inthe books, but in summer I just flowinto them no bother. The key is to not care - just relax and breathe into the posture. Let all the muscles in the back of the body relax deeply, use the breath to relax further and you’ll be there. Good luck! Enjoy! May your spine be strong and supple!
